Artist Statement

In my work, I investigate the nature of human connection, the instability of communication, and the central role that stories play in shaping our individual and collective identities. I am intrigued by languages, both visual and verbal. Playing with narrative, working in translation, and understanding communication frameworks are themes that underpin a wide array of my projects, from audio, text and installation work to photographic series. These dynamics show up in the form of a text or audio piece, where a word or phrase is isolated for reconsideration or a genre is subverted. Alternately, they show up in a photography project, where the memory of an event is restaged and translated into a new form, or where familiar visual tropes are reconfigured. I am most drawn to moments where a system breaks down or shifts. This system can be an interpersonal system, like a romantic relationship or a family; a concrete system, like the network of a public infrastructure project; or an invisible system, like patriarchy. I am curious about what we learn when we question the system and how this questioning can lead to deeper understanding.
